                                             The Dambusters 65th Anniversary flypast.

The Dambusters Memorial Event on the 16 May 2008 in the Upper Derwent Valley. This event was to commemorate those brave young aviators who made the ultimate sacrifice in order that we have the freedom and privalidges that we have today. In attendance was Squadron leader Les Munroe, who can be seen in the BBC helicopter tracing his training route that he and his crews made 65 years ago. Squadron Leader Munro was accompanied by Michael Gibson, the nephew of Wing Commander Guy Gibson, who led the Dambusters. Also in attendance was Sir Richard Todd, who played Guy Gibson in the lead role of the 1955 film the Dambusters.
All the Aircraft flew from RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire to take part in the anniversary fly-past, which was preceded by a special memorial service on top of the Derwent dam at 10am. The Lancaster from the Battle of Britain Memorial flight made 3 passes of the dam and on its final pass it was joined by 2 RAF Tornado gr4's from the present 617 sqn for a dramatic break over the dam. Also from the memorial flight were a fighter pair of a Spitfire and Hurricane who made 3 passes as did the flights Dakota. A fitting tribute to those brave young men who shall never be forgotten

The plan was given the codename Operation Chastise and was carried out on 17 May 1943. The squadron had to develop the tactics to deploy Barnes Wallis's "Bouncing bomb" The original commander of 617 Squadron, Wing Commander Guy Gibson, was awarded the Victoria Cross for his part in the raid. The Squadron's badge, approved by King George VI, depicts the bursting of a dam, in commemoration of Chastise.
